What Is Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST)?

Expiratory Muscle Strength Training is a science-backed technique that improves the power of your breathing muscles, especially those used for forceful exhalation, swallowing, and coughing. Originally designed for clients with Parkinson’s disease, dysphagia, and head and neck cancer, it’s now widely adopted to improve respiratory fitness, airway protection, and voice control.

You’ll use a handheld, spring-loaded valve device to train your muscles against resistance—just like lifting weights, but for your lungs. Over time, this improves maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), an important biomarker for breathing performance.
